I work as a contemporary children’s portrait photographer in Somerset West and surrounds. My husband, two children and I recently moved down from Gauteng in search of a better quality of life and I’m sure we’ll never look back!

I come from a family where talent in the arts abound. My siblings all signed up for art lessons as children and I was always in awe of what they were able to create. My mother can work wonders with anything you give her – fabric, beads, paint, ceramics, the list goes on. Despite taking piano lessons for many years, I still felt frustrated creatively, but could never figure out a way to express myself in a manner that would actually be appealing to others as well! It was fairly deep into my adulthood and really as a result of a hobby my sister picked up that my interest in photography started. Looking back, it shouldn’t have come as such as surprise as I had been obsessed with photographs as far back as I can remember. Nothing appeals to me as much as a good photograph capturing a warm memory and after the birth of my son the need to capture all of the fleeting special moments just intensified.

So after mentioning to my husband that a photography business might not be a bad idea, he promptly went and bought me my first digital SLR. Dozens of books on child photography followed and before long I set up a home studio. The rest, as they say, is history.

In my business, I focus on maternity-, baby and children photography. I love photographing children! They have such a great variety of frank facial expressions that no shoot can ever be boring. I have a very relaxed approach to every shoot and make sure to set aside more than enough time to deal with any eventuality. Children often have their own agenda and as photographer I have to respect and work around that. A shoot can only be successful if both parent and child is at ease and for this reason I tend not to focus on formal poses, but rather to capture the child in a natural and playful way. Every shoot is special and you can be sure that I will capture your child in a way that will remind you of the wonderful little person he or she was in that stage of life for years to come.

Although I have a studio at home, I also do shoots on location – your home, at parties or christenings, or any special location of your choice. This approach often makes the shoot more fun for the children and good locations present many photo opportunities.

Studio portraits are also very beautiful though and the decision of how you would like your shoot done is completely up to you. It is also possible to combine a studio shoot with natural light photographs in and around my own home.
